Recently, Heartland Regional Medical Center became an Accountable Care Organization (ACO). An ACO is a group of doctors and other health-care providers who agree to voluntarily work together with Medicare to give you the highest-quality medical care and services at the right time and in the right setting. An ACO is not an HMO plan or Medicare Advantage Plan. If you have traditional Medicare, you still have the right to choose any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare. You benefit because your doctors will be part of a team that focuses on the coordination and quality of your medical care. Being a part of an ACO is all about collaboration between providers, coordination of care and communication.
