Phillip Hornbostel, MD, FACS

HornbostelPhillip Hornbostel, MD, received his bachelors degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL and received his medical degree at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, CA. He trained in surgery at the University of Missouri/Kansas City Truman Medical Center, and has been board-certified in general surgery since 1985. He received advanced training in laparoscopic bariatric surgery at the University of Texas/Southwestern in Dallas, TX, in 2001. He performed the first laparoscopic gastric bypass in the greater Kansas City area in February of 2002, the first gastric band surgery in July of 2002, and the first sleeve gastroplasty in November of 2003. Before joining the Mosaic Life Care at St. Joseph - Bariatric Care team, Dr. Hornbostel practiced for 26 years in Sedalia, Mo., where he performed more than 1500 bariatric surgeries. Dr. Hornbostel is an ASMBS Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence┬« designee.

Chau N. Nguyen, MD, FACS

Chau

Chau N. Nguyen, MD, received his Bachelors of Science in Microbiology and Biochemistry at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Okla. He received his medical degree at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, College of Medicine in Tulsa, Okla. Dr. Nguyen completed his residency at the University of Missouri - Kansas City, Department of Surgery.

In his career, Dr. Nguyen has served as chief surgical resident at Truman Medical Center and at Saint Luke's Hospital in Kansas City. In 2006, he came to Mosaic Life Care at St. Joseph - Medical Center and served as a general surgeon and became the medical director for the Mosaic Life Care at St. Joseph - Bariatric Care. As one of his professional interests, Dr. Nguyen specializes in minimally invasive procedures. He is Board Certified in General Surgery and is affiliated with the American College of Surgeons, the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the Buchanan County Medical Society.

Dr. Nguyen believes that surgical weight loss in combination with proper nutrition and exercise is the most successful means of acquiring and maintaining a healthy weight and can reduce or resolve many of the associated health problems and improves quality of life.

Cindy Roberts, MSN, RN, FNP-BC, CBN

Roberts

Cindy is an advanced nurse practitioner and a certified bariatric nurse. Cindy Roberts, NP, began her nursing career at Mosaic Life Care in 1988 as a Registered Nurse. While practicing nursing at Mosaic Life Care she has had experience as an RN on the 2 South-surgical floor, surgical step down unit, dialysis, and critical care. While continuing her education in the field of nursing, she obtained her Masters of Science in Nursing in 2007 at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Her passions to help with the disease of Obesity lead her to a career in the field of Bariatric or weight loss surgeries. She has been a part of Bariatric Care since its inception.

Ms. Roberts works part of her time in the operating room with our surgeon assisting with Bariatric Surgeries. She also assists the doctor by following up with patients in the hospital after surgery and at Mosaic Life Care at St. Joseph - Bariatric Care before and after surgery. She also assists our non surgical weight loss patients. She enjoys caring for the patients throughout their weight loss process by either the surgical or non surgical option of weight loss. One of the most rewarding aspects of her role is getting to seeing patients resolve or reduce their health problems related to obesity as they loose weight.

Program Coordinator
Jenny Davey is your point of contact to get you ready for your surgery. Jenny will help you coordinate your insurance and financial needs, obtain insurance pre-authorization for your operation, facilitate obtaining your medical work-up, and ensure that we maintain everything on schedule. Jenny will contact your insurance and outline the steps required by your policy to obtain authorization for surgery. Jenny is your resource for information and reinforcement of education for all weight loss options Mosaic Life Care at St. Joseph - Bariatric Care has to offer. She is here to educate you about your insurance, troubleshoot and advocate for you - all working towards the goal of health improvement.

Physical Therapist
Stephen Chandler earned his physical therapy degree from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kan. He worked in private practice for 28 years before joining the physical therapy team in April 2006. He is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and the Kansas Physical Therapy Association where he has served in many roles, including president from 1991 - 1993. Stephen is licensed in physical therapy in Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska.

Licensed Dietitian
Krystal Staggs, RD, received her Bachelor's of Science degree in Dietetics from Iowa State University. She completed a supervised dietetic internship at ISU also and began her career as a Registered Dietitian with Mosaic Life Care in 2002. Since then she has worked with the Outpatient program, developing her counseling skills and focusing on helping people achieve and maintain the weight loss they desire. Krystal has received a Certificate of Training in Weight Management through the American Dietetic Association and also has training from the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Krystal continues to use her expertise in weight management by providing individual and group nutrition counseling and support to every patient at Mosaic Life Care at St. Joseph - Bariatric Care.

Licensed Psychologist
Dr. Shirley Stuber Taylor, Licensed Psychologist, received her Doctorate in Counseling from the University of Missouri in St Louis. Originally from the St Joseph area, she worked in St. Louis for 34 years prior to returning to her hometown area. While in St. Louis she worked as the Lead Psychologist for a weight loss program at Deaconess Hospital for several years. Dr. Taylor has counseled hundreds of individuals who have struggled with weight loss efforts and the accompanying quality of life issues. In the Mosaic Life Care at St. Joseph - Bariatric Care she conducts psychological screenings and serves as the facilitator for the weekly patient group sessions.
