Amebiasis

Overview

Amoebiasis infection is most common in tropical areas with poor sanitation. Travelers to these areas should not consume untreated water and uncooked food, such as produce, that may have been washed in local water.

Symptoms

If symptoms occur, they may be mild and include cramping and diarrhea. Bloody stools, fever, vomiting, and, rarely, liver abscess may occur in severe cases.

Treatments

Treatment includes antibiotics.
