When to make a doctor’s appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Swelling doesn't improve within five days
  • Pain persists for a few weeks
  • Limits ability to work, walk, or complete daily tasks

Self-care

Rest, and elevate ankle when possible. Apply ice pack up to 20 minutes, three times a day, and wrap with a compression bandage. Over-the-counter pain relievers may help.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Obvious injury
  • Severe pain or swelling
  • Fever, redness, or warmth
  • Can't bear weight on ankle
