Overview

Beriberi, or thiamin deficiency, is usually caused by poor diet or alcoholism.

Symptoms

Symptoms include appetite loss, constipation, confusion, weakness, arm or leg pain, shortness of breath, and swollen feet or legs.

Treatments

Treatments include B-1 supplements and eating more B-1-rich foods, such as whole-grain cereals, beans, and beef.
