When to make a doctor’s appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

• Still painful after three days
• Unexplained or unusual bruising, such as from gums or nose
• Frequent bruising

Self-care

Ice several times daily for 30 minutes, rest and keep elevated. An elastic bandage for compression and pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen may help.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a doctor immediately if:

• Severe pain
• Lump forms over top of bruise
