Bunions

Overview

A bunion is a bony bump that forms on the joint at the base of the big toe. It happens when bones in the front part of your foot move out of place. The tip of your big toe may crowd or overlap the toe next to it. Tight shoes, foot stress, and arthritis are causes.

Symptoms

Symptoms may include swelling, redness or soreness around the joint at the base of your big toe. Corns and calluses may develop where the first and second toes overlap.

Treatments

Treatments include changing shoes, padding the foot, and pain medications. Painful bunions can be removed surgically.
