Opportunistic infection

Overview

An opportunistic infection (OI) is an often harmless infection that causes serious disease in a person with a weakened immune system. HIV and lupus weaken the immune system, for example. OIs include tuberculosis and candidiasis. Infections may be prevented by safer sex, safe food handling and avoidance of people with known infections.
