Otitis externa

Overview

Swimmer's ear (otitis externa) is an infection of the outer ear canal, which runs from the eardrum to the outside of the head. The infection is often caused by water remaining in the ear after swimming. This creates a moist environment that helps bacteria grow.

Treatments

A person may be prescribed eardrops and be advised to keep the ear dry.
