When to make a doctor’s appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Pain persists or worsens despite home care
  • Affects ability to work or do household activities
  • Redness or swelling

Self-care

Rest and try to avoid movements that cause pain. Icing the painful area may help, as can over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen and naproxen.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Severe pain
  • Sudden swelling
  • Unable to move joint
  • A visible deformity, particularly after injury
