TAVR approach to heart valve replacement

Mosaic offers transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), a minimally invasive procedure that inserts a new aortic heart valve without removing the old valve. Patients who have the TAVR procedure typically experience less pain and anxiety, shorter hospital stays and faster recoveries compared to traditional heart valve replacement procedures.

How does TAVR work?

During TAVR, a catheter inserts a fully collapsible replacement valve to the valve site. When expanded, the new valve moves the old valve out of the way. The replacement valve takes over regulating blood flow.

How is TAVR different from standard valve replacements?

Traditional valve replacement procedures involve invasive open-heart surgery that separates the chest cavity. Instead, the TAVR replaces the valve using very small incisions in the groin or chest. As a result, it provides a treatment option to people who may not have been considered good candidates for surgery or otherwise have limited choices for heart valve repair.

Who should consider TAVR?

TAVR is for patients with symptomatic severe aortic stenosis and have been evaluated by a team of doctors to be at low or greater risk for open surgical therapy.
